Poetry of Issue 9: You’re Nobody ‘til Somebody Loves You

You’re Nobody ‘til Somebody Loves You

And you learn to love them back

If you can’t find somebody

you might spend months

in a darkened room

while the curtains begin to rot

like the silver-spoon tycoon who stacks

Mason jars of his urine

bribes politicians

New York strip steak

every day        medium rare

push the larger peas away

every day        precisely 12

If there’s no love in the details

life’s just a compendium of hates

and contamination is everywhere

Frail    naked

but for a pink napkin over his cock

Howard Hughes watches movies

purchases hotels          restaurants

lovers

The napkin can’t save him

Movies can’t save him

Ice Station Zebra and The Conqueror

on continuous loop

Even Ava Gardner couldn’t save him

She confessed she just didn’t love him

Pain and codeine

Five docked hypodermic needles

stuck in the flesh of his arms
