from "The Old Monk Poems"

Old monk

sleeps late.

His thin

gruel

will wait.

~

from "The Old Monk Poems"

Yes, in an earlier

incarnation I might

have been Wang Wei, the poet,

the old monk says, but now

not much of him remains.

from "The Old Monk Poems"

If you’d just shut up,

the old monk said,

you could hear

the mountain singing.

~

From "The Old Monk Poems"

What do I know,

the old monk said —

sometimes I can’t even

touch my nose.

~

from "The Old Monk Poems"

Up the mountain, down

the mountain, up

the mountain, the way

is not secret,

the old monk says.

You just keep going.

From "The Old Monk Poems"

Do not fear

the darkness,

the old monk says.

That is where

the stars are found.

~
