Together My Love and I

stand by the river that
runs to the sea.
Clouds rip at their seams.
              Egg-shaped stones
sharpen their edge
on the blade of a western
wind.
             Something rises
wild and uncontrolled
in a songbird’s throat,
silencing all but love,
           the saddest of words.
The moon and stars
forget how to shine, the
night sky no longer
anticipates the
dawn, together
our hearts stop,
                     and stop
some more: not
suicide
      but a death long planned
but not in cold blood.
Something small
as a key
          opens
all the doors
in the mountain.
