Mark Young

for John Coltrane

There are
always pauses in
the greatest
solos, not because

the musician
needs to think
about what
is coming next
but because they
already hear it

coming, & must
take breath
to maximize
it, a climber
soaring far above

what we
can manage
in the thick air
down below.
