Long Lost Long Ago
before time was invented
people hung around
in trees watching clouds roll by
silently noting how one
differed from others
none were compared to bearded
gods rabid dogs schmutz
simply to be was enough
besides no one had named things
since that would take time
which of course they didn’t have
so they lazed about
doing nothing growing fat
& round eventually
thudding to the ground
they lay in gray grass rotting
until one of them
today thought to be marcus
crassus said somebody ought
to pick us up build
us fine houses & see to
our every comfort
laws were written to this end
thus began the leisure class
