I and the Lamb

The job description says I deliver
mail but that’s not the only
thing I do. I also toss flyers
for people who don’t want them.
Over the years I’ve gotten
to know what they want.
I get a kick out of the lawn
jockeys and statues. I always
wonder if there’s a spare
key taped under a small
recumbent Buddha. Not that
I’d take anything. All the dogs
love me but I think they’d
bite if they thought I was
a thief. I was able to stop
them from chasing a poor stray
lamb but the neighborhood
kids wouldn’t listen.
They kept chasing it toward
the woods. I told them
the woods were no place for
a lamb. It kept going for
the fence until it finally
slipped through. All we heard
was yelping and snapping.
They thought a wolf
got it but wanted to believe me
when I said it got away.
