John McKernan
Pablo Picasso Never Painted a Nativity
Mark Rothko would sometimes say
The color red reminds me of God
Michelangelo Well There you have it
The entire history of turnips and creation
Floating above your ears On a ceiling
Cézanne prayed three times every day
Went to mass seven days a week in the morning
Kept a rosary with his brushes and paints
Showed us something more than a hill or a house
And then here’s the sound a Christmas Card makes
When being chewed by a mewling infant
How it reminds me of Nebraska icicles
Followed by the breeze through a palm tree
Some midnights before sunrise Bright orange in the East
