Michael Igoe

Park Falls

In Wisconsin there were churches
that gave away crates of oranges.
I trained to be the eternal victim
to go further than was expected
brought up in a way of thinking
about what makes you manlike.

In the habit of ouija readings
I came to a dread conclusion.
There are only three or four things
that can change lives for the better.
They lie in a tyranny of emotion
that jilts lovers one after another.

Walking through grasslands
I wear the afternoon frowns
on the pedestrian crosswalk.
Close to a deer crossing
evening vespers replace
the sound of the diesels.
