A red-eyed, outsized bear ploddingly kills the expedition’s crew, biting off heads & flanks, chomping cadets in two, providing guts & gore. Only the Inuit can stop a monster conjured from the world beyond. Officer Godwin, fluent in Inuit, asks a pelt-clad, igloo-dwelling woman how to slay the beast. Why would she tell? Why is he asking in English? As if to endear himself, he says he’s here on a Mission for the Queen! She’s not impressed. The spirit pantry’s empty of whiskey. The captain bellows in the darkness of his rooms, battling the demons of no-booze, the way my husband roars when I propose divorce.
